Namibian Biodiversity Database
Article 95 of the Namibian Constitution states inter alia:
The State shall actively promote and maintain the welfare of the people by adopting policies aimed at the maintenance of ecosystems,
essential ecological processes and biological diversity of Namibia and utilization of living natural resources on a sustainable
basis for the benefit of all Namibians, both present and future.
The Namibian Biodiversity Database aims to increase the availability of Namibian biodiversity information in support of the
Namibian Constitution and also as per our obligations under Article 17 of the
International Convention on Biological Diversity.
It is a joint project of the Namibian Ministry for Environment and Tourism
and the National Botanical Research Institute.
Current main focus is on the provision of baseline biodiversity data for conservation planning in the future Sperrgebiet
National Park and surroundings, an initiative funded by the Succulent Karoo Ecosystem
Programme (SKEP). In a parallel development, Global Spatial Data Infrastructure (GSDI)
is sponsoring a GISCorps volunteer programmer to further develop our capacity for displaying
spatial data.
Other recent major donors were the Global Biodiversity Information
Facility (GBIF) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ).
